What Is Gadfly Machines?
A workshop where dialectic becomes design — where humans and machines reason together to build tools, systems, and services for human flourishing.
Solo builders and small teams use the Socratic method and its derivative forms of practical reasoning to make better decisions about what to build and how to proceed.
Focus Areas
- Dialectical AI Tools — AI systems trained to question, not just answer. Tools that help builders examine assumptions and reason through decisions.
- Decision-Making Frameworks — Structured approaches to practical reasoning drawn from the Socratic tradition, adapted for modern builders.
- Human–Machine Dialogue — Exploring productive forms of conversation between humans and AI, where both sides contribute to clearer thinking.
Why "Gadfly"?
Socrates called himself a gadfly — an irritant that kept Athens from falling asleep. In the same spirit, Gadfly Machines builds tools and systems that provoke better thinking through persistent, productive questioning.
The Workshop
The Gadfly Machines workshop is a community space where solo builders and small teams refine ideas and develop their work through dialectic with each other and machines. Builders bring real decisions, and through structured questioning, arrive at clarity about aims, means, and next steps.
Philosophy
Our approach draws on the dialectical tradition — from Socrates' method of questioning, through Aristotle's practical reasoning (phronesis and techne), to Hegel's productive contradictions. Knowledge emerges through back-and-forth dialogue, not one-sided assertion.
The ultimate aim is εὐδαιμονία (eudaimonia) — human flourishing. We build things that help people live well, think clearly, and act with purpose.
